Therapy Approaches

Together with Dr. Sneed, you will arrive at an approach to address your specific goals. The changes you make using these approaches might lead to habits that help you live a happier, more meaningful, more productive life in general. For some therapies, psychologists who offer these approaches must complete training allowing them to practice formally recognized specialties beyond the comprehensive PhD program and Clinical Psychology license. Dr. Sneed has completed training in three specialties: Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology, Couple and Family Psychology, and School Psychology.

  • Collaborative, one-on-one meetings use dialogue within an ongoing supportive environment to help you make desired change. Goals are flexible, but often involve enhancing mood, managing stress, adapting to change, improving relationships, resolving emotional discomfort, reducing anxiety, and balancing competing life demands. Telepsychology is an option when appropriate and useful.

  • Dr. Sneed understands that family context has substantial impact on a child or adolescent. She also understands that supporting a child through emotional or behavioral difficulties can be very challenging to parents. Seeing parents as a kid’s greatest ally, Dr. Sneed might offer parent consultation to help parents understand how best to help their child or adolescent meet their therapy goals. Parent consultation can also help parenting partners work through differences in their approach to parenting.

  • High school and college students often experience particular stresses and demands related to their status as full-time students. Unusual among psychotherapists, Dr. Sneed earned a master’s degree in education on her path to completing her PhD and license in Clinical Psychology. Her experience working with students as clients means she is familiar with how students can succeed in academic environments while managing stress, dealing with relationships, and finding peace in a demanding stage of life. Telepsychology meetings might be appropriate to keep the work going for students whose locations and schedules frequently change.

  • Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology is a recognized specialty within the licensed practice of clinical psychology, requiring advanced training and knowledge of developmental processes, adaptation, diagnosis of children, and the functioning of children in social contexts. Dr. Sneed often to works with children in her dedicated play therapy office to allow young children to have more relaxing interactions, express themselves more fully, and rehearse new behavior patterns through spoken language combined with demonstrations using toys and art.

  • Couple and Family Psychology is a recognized specialty within the practice of clinical psychology, requiring training and knowledge in the ways groups of people, such as families or couples, create a “system” of functioning. In couple or family therapy, Dr. Sneed will use her extensive specialty training in family systems while bringing more than one person in the room. The goal is to help identify and change how the couple or family functions as a unit. Our hope is that by improving the way your family functions as a “system,” you will not only address the problem that you are focusing on today, but will be better prepared to effectively address your next concern, and the next, going forward.
